I know I asked about keynote files before and I also read a few threads about pptx files, but I’m not sure I understand it.

I did once, with little lag, import a powerpoint made by another person on a windows laptop. But I cannot repeat the same with something that originated in Keynote even after exporting a pptx, opening in powerpoint for mac, and resaving it from powerpoint.

Is the only way to export images and use those?

We export the powerpoints to PDF in our church. That way it can still be bundled, but it is of course static, so any animations or transitions won’t be included.

Recently I added Microsoft PowerPoint to my Mac and if the PowerPoint file originates in on Microsoft it can be imported into quelea. So I may have to do it this way.
